The 2017 Land Rover Discovery has been spied testing in Germany.

Although the prototype is heavily camouflaged, our spy photographers can make out that it is the all-new Land Rover Discovery based on its shape and size. Thanks to a new aluminum platform, the next-generation model will shed quite a bit of weight and it appears that the British automaker is rounding out some edges, giving the Discovery a more modern and less boxy design.

Expect the new Discovery to maintain its off-road prowess while the interior will get more elegant with higher quality materials and new technology. In recent months, Jaguar Land Rover has shown off quite a bit of fancy technology including a laser head-up display and even a new “transparent hood” that displays what’s underneath the vehicle by using a head-up display and a front mounted camera.

Engine choices will be varied as Jaguar Land Rover now has a wide array of powerplants to choose from including standard gasoline engines, diesels and hybrids.

The luxury SUV will debut sometime next year and will be the second member of Land Rover’s new Discovery family of leisure models, following the compact Discovery Sport. The Land Rover Discovery will replace the LR4 nameplate in North America.
