2017 McLaren 570GT Focuses on 'Practicality'

Do you need supercar speed with sedan practicality? McLaren’s new 570GT might be the car for you, and it made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show.

McLaren says that the 570GT is focused on “day-to-day usability and long-distance touring capability,” and is the third model to join the Sports Series family alongside the 570S and 540C.

Despite its focus on road driving, the 570GT still has real supercar credentials thanks to a massive 562-horsepower from a mid-mounted 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8. It is built on a carbon fiber monocoque chassis that contributes to the car’s low 2,976 lb dry weight. Jumping from zero to 62 mph will take 3.4 seconds while a top speed of 204 mph is possible.

Where the real practicality comes from is the new 7.7-cubic foot storage deck found behind the front seats which is accessed by a side-opening large glass hatch. The hatch always opens to the curb side, whether or not the car is left- or right-hand drive. Up front, a small trunk is also available, offering another 5.2 cubic-feet of space.

Standard on the car is a panoramic glass roof which seamlessly blends in to the glass trunk hatch. The roof is treated with 18-percent tint and uses a special film to help absorb solar radiation and provide noise insulation.

Inside, high quality leathers are used and you can find eight-way adjustable heated seats, an electronically adjusted steering column, soft-close doors, a quieter exhaust compared to the 570S, and a specially tuned eight-speaker audio system from Bowers & Wilkins.

To make sure the car rides like a touring car, the spring rates have been reduced to decrease stiffness by 15 percent at the front and 10 percent in the rear. The steering setup has also been made slightly looser to allow easier cruising at high speeds.
