Hyundai has settled the case of its misstated fuel economy ratings with a $41.2 million payment.

About one-quarter of Hyundai’s 2011 to 2013 vehicles had misstated mpg ratings and had to be reduced by 1 to 2 mpg. Customers who owned the vehicles were issues debit cars to reimburse them based on the numer of miles the car had driven between the old EPA rating being released and the new EPA ratings.

Hyundai has now entered into an agreement with 33 States and the District of Columbia to resolve their investigation into the matter. The Korean brand also says that the agreement contains no “admission of any wrongdoing or violations of any law.”

“Even with our adjusted ratings, we are encouraged that Hyundai continues to lead the automotive industry in fuel efficiency and environmental performance,” said David Zuchowski, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor America.
