The next-generation Land Rover Evoque has been spied undergoing tests in the north of Sweden.

The next-gen Evoque will ride on an updated version of the vehicle’s D8 front-wheel drive architecture, which has been codenamed L551. We hear Jaguar-Land Rover focused on improving the Evoque’s overall comfort with the revisions, so expect a more refined ride and perhaps bit more space for back seat passengers – though the crossover isn’t expected to grow a significant amount in size.

As far as the engines go, expect JLR’s 2.0-liter turbocharged Ingenium engine to make an appearance in different power outputs. A 2.0-liter diesel should appear in markets outside of North America as well. The new Evoque is also rumored to be the first FLR vehicle to get the automaker’s new mild-hybrid powertrain, which will pair a three-cylinder 1.5-liter engine with a small electric motor and a 48V integrated starter/alternator. This mild-hybrid setup requires extensive modification of the Evoque’s platform, so it won’t be available from launch until 2020 at the earliest.

As you can tell from the spy photos, the new Evoque will retain the outgoing model’s recognisable and much-loved exterior shape, with some small revisions helping it to appear a bit more grown-up. In other words, it will retain its rearward sloping roofline, coupe-like greenhouse and rising beltline.

Look for the new Evoque to make its debut sometime later this year in time for a market launch in early 2019.
