What would it take to transform Lincoln from a luxury imitator to a genuine rival to the world’s finest premium marques? While there are numerous factors, one of the most important is a flagship sedan, with size, opulence and it must be rear-wheel drive.

According to two sources inside Ford, the Blue Oval is mulling a flagship rear-drive sedan that would rival the Lexus LS and Mercedes S-Class. Based on a modified version of the Mustang’s rear-drive platform it would be used as an example of the brand’s latest technology and highlight new innovations.

Recently Ford announced major plans for the Lincoln brand, giving the brand it’s own product development team while poaching a top designer from Cadillac.
