GM Issues Four More Recalls Spanning 89,000 Vehicles
General Motors continues to add to its record-setting total of recalls for 2014.
Four separate recalls have been announced that affect various GM models with an assortment of issues. The first affects 57,512 model year 2014 Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, 2015 Silverado and Sierra heavy duty pickups, 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban SUVs and the 2015 Yukon and Yukon XL SUVs. According to that recall notice, affected vehicles have an issue with the base radio, which might not emit an audible warning when the key is in the ignition and the driver’s door is open. In addition, it might also not sound the chime to alert the driver of an unbuckled seat belt. The American automaker is not aware of any injuries related to the first recall and said dealers will reprogram the radio control module.

The second recall affects 31,520 model year 2012 Buick Veranos, Chevrolet Camaros, Cruzes and Sonics for a potential problem that could prevent the airbag from deploying. According to GM, the vehicles’ “shorting bar” inside the airbag could occasionally contact the airbag terminals, causing a warning light to illuminate and potentially preventing the airbags from deploying in an event of a crash. The company is aware of one accident and injury related to the issue and is aware “of other crashes where airbags did not deploy.” It isn’t clear if the other non-deploying air bags are linked to this defect.
Additionally, 61 Chevrolet Spark compacts from the 2013 and 2014 model years are being recalled along with the 2013 Buick Encore for a condition that could prevent the passenger airbag from deploying properly. The company is not aware of any accidents related to this issue.
Finally, 33 Chevrolet Corvettes are being recalled for a short circuit in the sensing and diagnostic module that could disable the front airbags. Again, GM is not aware of any accidents related to the issue.
In total this year, GM has recalled 13.9 million vehicles in the U.S. through 34 campaigns. In total, 15.9 million vehicles have been affected in North America.
