Ram Adopts SAE J2807 Towing Standards
Ram is following in the footsteps of Toyota and GM by releasing new tow ratings for their pickup trucks, based on SAE J2807 testing.
The American automaker has announced that Ram Truck is the only full-size pickup truck manufacturer to adopt J2807 towing practices across all three segments: 1/2-ton, 3/4-ton and 1-ton. The Ram pickup maximum towing capacities remain unchanged or improved under SAE J2807 standards.

Equipped with a 3.6-liter PentaStar V6, the Ram 1500 has a towing capacity of 7,600 lbs while the 3.0-liter EcoDiesel model offers 9,200 lbs. The Ram 1500 V8 with a 5.7-liter HEMI offers 10,650 lbs.
In the 3/4-ton category, the Ram 2500 V8 with a 6.4-liter HEMI is rated at 16,300 lbs and the 6.7-liter Cummins diesel is good for a best-in-class 17,970 lbs. Lastly, the one-ton Ram 3500 V8 (6.4-liter HEMI) can tow up to 16,420 lbs while the range-topping 6.7-liter Cummins diesel is a best-in-class 30,000 lbs.
J2807 is a standard set of tests devised to make sure that each company’s advertised tow ratings were found using the same formula.
“Because our customers asked for it, every single 2015 model year pickup truck Ram sells will come with a trailer-tow rating achieved using SAE’s J2807 testing protocols,” said Reid Bigland, President and CEO, Ram Truck Brand. “No other automaker can make that claim.”
