Fiat Chrysler Trademarks Three New Names

Fiat Chrysler has filed to protect three new names.

The company has filed to protect the names Obsidian, Backcountry and Recon with the US Patent and Trademark Office. The names are likely to be used for trim levels, though one may actually be a new vehicle name.

For Obsidian and Backcountry, the description of the trademark reads, “motor vehicles, namely, passenger automobiles, their structural parts, trim and badges,” suggesting that these two names may become trim levels on vehicles.

For Recon, the description says, “Automobiles; Badges for vehicles,” leading us to believe that the Recon name may be attached to a new vehicle from FCA. Judging by the rugged nature of the names themselves, Jeep vehicles seem to be the most likely candidates to receive these badges.

It’s worth noting that many trademark filings never end up seeing actual use, as automakers like to protect names just in case they may want to use them sometime in the future.
