Ram Recalls 2M Trucks Over Unexpected Airbag Deployment
Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) is recalling 2 million Ram pickup trucks in two separate recall actions, each one for airbag issues.
The first and largest recall affects 1,060,531 Ram 1500, 2500, 3500, 4500, and 5500 trucks manufactured between January 18, 2011, and October 7, 2014. In the affected trucks, which are all equipped with the optional electronic vehicle information center, a steering wheel wiring harness can rub against the driver’s airbag module retainer spring, possibly leading to an unexpected deployment of the driver’s airbag.

Dealers will secure the wiring harness and protective caps will be added to the air bag retainer ends to fix the problem. The recall is expected to begin on September 19, 2015.
Second, FCA is bringing back 667,406 model-year 2013-2015 Ram 1500 and 2500 pickups for inadvertent deployment of the side-curtain airbags. Some of the modules have a low deployment threshold, which can cause unexpected side-curtain airbag and seatbelt pre-tensioner deployment.
FCA says it knows of two injuries related to this problem. The company says that “almost all” of the inadvertent deployments happened when the vehicle door was slammed hard. There is no timeline for when this recall will begin, so in the interim, “FCA US advises that owners of these vehicles exercise caution when closing doors.”
