Subaru already showed off a concept of its next-generation Impreza at the 2015 Tokyo Motor Show, but now we get to see the real deal testing on the roads.

These prototypes, both a sedan and hatchback were spotted, were caught testing with their chief rivals. It’s clear Subaru is targeting the top tier with its compact car entry, as the Ford Focus, Mazda3 and Honda Civic were all being benchmarked against the new car.

This new Impreza is expected to debut late next year, and will ride on a version of the new Subaru Global Platform. This platform will promise extra interior space, but the new Subaru Impreza will also feature an upgraded Boxer engine, that will sport direct injection.

And finally, even though its hard to see with all that camouflage, the Subaru Impreza will feature sportier styling, previewed by the VIZIV concept from Tokyo.
