All-Electric Maserati Sports Car Could Arrive in 2019

Maserati’s next foray into the world of high-performance sports cars could be coming with an all-electric powertrain.

Speaking with Bloomberg, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) CEO Sergio Marchionne suggested that the upcoming Alfieri sports car could launch with an all-electric version sometime around 2019. “I’ve always thought the economic model that supports Tesla is something that Fiat Chrysler could replicate as we have the brand and the vehicles to do it,” Marchionne told Bloomberg Television. “I think that to use one of our potential cars as an experiment in this area is interesting.”

Marchionne has famously been against EVs, especially considering that Fiat 500e that is sold in California loses money for the brand. “I’m not as convinced as some others are about the fact that electrification is the solution for all of man’s ills,” said Marchionne. “We need to experiment as we are doing now with connected cars and mobility as electrification is one of the potential answers.” Still, Marchionne recognizes that EVs may be the future, and is considering selling another Fiat-branded EV, but this time in Europe.

As FCA moves into the future, plenty of hybrids will be entering its lineup to meet tightening fuel economy standards according to Marchionne.

The new Alfieri should launch sometime in the next year, sporting a turbocharged V6 engine under the hood for propulsion. The brand says it will be a true sports car and will look to take on the Jaguar F-Type and Porsche 911.
