2013 Hyundai Elantra Recalled Over Brake Issue

Hyundai is calling back some older Elantra models for the same issue that plagued a group of Sonatas.

The issue is that the brake pad material can deteriorate over time, eventually causing the switch plunger to stick, which means that the brake lights will stay on even when the pedal is released. In addition, the issue can also allow the transmission to be shifted out of park without the brake pedal being pressed. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) also notes that the issue could cause the car’s traction control warning lamp to light up.

Overall, 64,500 Elantra units are affected by the recall in the U.S. The affected units were built between December 1, 2012 and April 30, 2013 at the Korean automaker’s factories in the U.S. and South Korea. Notices will be sent out starting September 30, 2016. To resolve the issue, each of the cars will be inspected and will receive a revised stopper pad for the brake pedal assembly free of charge.
