Mazda’s most loyal customers in Canada can now pre-order the new MX-5 Miata RF.

The new 2017 Mazda MX-5 Miata RF made its debut earlier this year at the New York Auto Show, sporting a fastback-style retractable hardtop. Mazda Canada is inviting a select group of loyal customers to secure their order for one of the first cars by sending them a unique PIN code via email. The special code will give those customers access to the pre-order website and allow them to build, customize and order their own MX-5 Miata RF one week before the pre-order site opens up to the public.

A total of 50 built-to-order units will be available through the special website.

In Canada, the MX-5 RF will be available in two trim levels when it arrives in early 2017: GS and GT. It will start from $38,800 Canadian while the GT model has a starting price of $42,200. An optional Sport Package is available for $4,400 that adds 17-inch forged BBS wheels, Brembo front brakes and red painted calipers, while the interior gets Recaro sport seats with leather and Alcantara.

“With the new MX-5 retractable fastback, we want to bring the joy of open-top driving to even more people; those people who value the security and design of a fixed-top coupe, but still want the opportunity to drive with the wind in their hair,” said Vincent Reboul, Director, Marketing, Mazda Canada. “This exclusive pre-order offer will allow fifty Canadians to be among the first in the world to share in the excitement of this brand new version of the MX-5.”

Miata starts at $31,900+shipping and if they add VAT on top of that, and then the base of $38,800 means it costs $7,000 to make the miata heavier specifically at its highest point for a much worse center of gravity... normally I don't care, if my 3600 lb car has a moonroof adding some more weight up there but this car is ALL about light weight.. so I can't fathom spending more to make it worse. it's like paying more for a Porsche without a radio, nav or real badges - but kinda opposite. Instead of paying more for less weight, you're paying more for more weight...
