New Volkswagen Golf R Will Get Launch Control

Volkswagen updated the seventh-generation Golf earlier this year in Europe (it should come to North America soon) with more power, tech, and tweaked looks.

Following up on that, the company has just released a teaser for the upcoming Golf R Performance.

Although it’s still shrouded in mystery, the teaser video promises 17-inch brakes, launch control, and implies that the car will get an adjustable ride height, a useful trick if it’s to use the new diffuser that’s been bolted to the back. It doesn’t appear that VW will add any power (the standard Golf R comes with 310 hp), but the video shows the car running at 267 km/h, which is the equivalent of 166 mph.

To go with that top speed, the launch control will get the new Golf R Performance to 62 mph in just 4.6 seconds. That time, as well as its lap times, are helped by the sticky Pirelli Trofeo R tires (similar to those Lamborghini used to crush the Nurburgring lap record) that the car was reportedly wearing in Geneva.

With aero mods borrowed from the GTI Clubsport (which holds the front-wheel-drive Nurburgring lap record) and a titanium exhaust from Akrapovic, too, it should all add up to an obscenely quick car.
