Tesla Helped Some of Its Owners Escape Hurricane Irma

Tesla has helped some owners escape Hurricane Irma by remotely extending the range on some of its vehicles.

As Hurricane Irma approached the state of Florida and mandatory evacuations were issued, Tesla remotely unlocked the full battery pack capacity on the 60 and 60D version of Model S and Model X vehicles, according to a report by Electrek. Those vehicles are actually equipped with 75-kWh battery packs, but the full capacity is unlocked by software only if the customer pays extra for the upgrade.

But to aid in evacuating out of Hurricane Irma’s path, the American automaker remotely unlocked the range to affected owners in Florida, since every extra mile helps when it comes to evacuating from a hurricane.

According to Tesla, one owner in a mandatory evacuation zone reached out to the automaker requesting temporary access to the 75-kWh battery capacity since he needed another 30 miles or so range to optimize his evacuation route. Tesla not only agreed but decided the increased range could benefit other owners in a similar situation.

    What a marvelous way to treat your customers. I can't afford a Tesla myself, but I sure would go out of my way to get one someday just to support a company that is this ethical.
