BMW X3 M and X4 M Shown With Twin Turbo Inline-Six
High-performance BMW X3 M and BMW X4 M crossovers are currently under development, with the German automaker bringing two prototypes for the vehicles out to the DTM race at the Nurburgring this weekend.
BMW is keeping details on the X3 M and X4 M to a minimum for now, but it did confirm the crossovers would come with “a newly developed straight six-cylinder engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology and high-revving characteristics,” along with an M-tuned xDrive all-wheel drive system and an M rear axle differential. The automaker also promises they will “set benchmarks in terms of dynamics in their respective vehicle segment.”
The prototypes feature a revised front fascia with larger air intake openings as well, in addition to a different rear bumper with integrated exhaust tips, M alloy wheels and M brakes. Interior details weren’t disclosed, but we’re expecting to see available M sport seats, an M sport steering wheel, M tri-color stitching and M just badges everywhere you look.

Performance specifications also weren’t mentioned by BMW, but we should see similar performance to the M3 and M4, which use a twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six making 425 hp and 410 lb-ft of torque. Even more power may even be on tap, with the M3 and M4 Competition models making 444 hp and 410 lb-ft from an upgraded version of the same six-cylinder engine. BMW’s Aisin-sourced eight-speed automatic transmission should be the only available transmission option.
The BMW X3 M and X4 M may debut soon – potentially at the 2018 Paris Motor Show in October. They should go on sale in Europe in early or mid 2019, arriving in the United States and Canada later in the year or in early 2020.
