Electric VW Buggy Previewed in Christmas Card

It’s no secret that Volkswagen is planning an onslaught of fully electric ‘ID’ branded vehicles.

The automaker’s forthcoming family of BEVs will eventually include a hatchback, a crossover, a van and according to recent reports, even a beach buggy.

That’s right. According to Autocar, VW is planning to revive the iconic Meyers Manx in the way of a modern day electric beach buggy. The automaker teased the concept version of the fully electric buggy on its 2018 Christmas card, showing a high-riding, open top vehicle with circular LED taillights and a sand flag for dune driving.

This electric off-roader will be joined by two other retro-inspired EVs in the ID lineup: the production version of the ID Buzz van and a yet-to-be-seen electric hatch inspired by the VW Beetle.

VW will allegedly debut the concept version of the electric ID buggy at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show in March. Autocar describes the concept as being a two-seater with a low-set body and an open roof. You can also expect off-road add-ons such as a rollover bar and large wheels shod in knobby off-road tires.

If the VW ID buggy ever reaches production, it could fill consumers’ appetites for tiny yet capable off-road vehicles. This buying trend is exemplified by the popularity of the new Suzuki Jimny. The tiny, affordable off-roader has been so popular with consumers that UK Suzuki dealers have been turning customers away, as they simply do not have enough allocation.

The first production ID vehicle to come from VW will be the ID hatch, expected to debut next year and go on sale in 2020. The production ID Buzz is expected to land in 2022, so the production buggy, if it ever sees the light of day, should arrive sometime after that.

Better start building some charging stations out in the desert, VW.
