Whether it’s an available air suspension system or bedside storage bins, luxury car-rivaling interiors, or a 12-inch multimedia display, innovation is a cornerstone of the Ram Truck brand.

Ram and Ford have both unveiled their latest heavy-duty pickup trucks and now it’s Chevrolet’s turn to strike back. The bow-tie brand rolled out its redesigned 2020 Silverado HD at the factory where it’s built in Flint, Michigan.

Trucks are hugely popular in America, and for good reason.

Another shot has been fired in the best-in-class war going on in the world of heavy duty (HD) pickup trucks and this time it’s Ram holding the smoking gun.

Ram has overtaken rivals in the heavy-duty pickup segment. When properly equipped, their 3500-model trucks are rated to tow a segment-leading 31,210 pounds.

“Towing is the No. 1 reason people buy heavy-duty trucks,” said Jeff Johnson, manager of Ram Heavy Duty marketing.

Automakers love to play the numbers game, especially when it comes to big trucks. A recent spat between Ram and Ford saw both companies claiming the “best-in-class” towing title for their respective heavy duty pickups like kids in a sandbox arguing over who has the better castle.

This year, Chevrolet’s Super Bowl commercial is promoting its heavy-duty trucks and, of course, manliness.

Ford’s 6.7-liter Powerstroke turbocharged diesel V8 is a popular option among heavy-duty truck buyers. 

Given that it’s long been the preferred supplier of vehicles to taxi fleets, Ford has offered a Compressed Natural Gas option on its Crown Victoria for years. More recently, it has expanded the availability of CNG and LPG (Liquified Petroleum Gas) options to its larger commercial vehicles, namely the E-Series vans (of which it has already shipped some 3000 conversions) Transit Connect and most recently, the F-450 and F-550 Super Duty chassis cab trucks.

There was once a time when pickups were essentially utilitarian vehicles. However, during the 1980s and 1990s, half-ton full-size rigs became increasingly laden with creature comforts, leather bucket seats, center consoles, power everything and serious in car entertainment. Now the concept of luxury truck is expanding upmarket, with General Motors recently launching a luxury GMC Denali as part of the Sierra Heavy-Duty line from 2011.
