AutoGuide‘s spy photographers have caught the 2015 Volvo XC90 in prototype form testing in northern Sweden.

Previously, our spy photographers caught an early mule for the next-generation XC90 testing, but this is the first set of photos showing a proper prototype. Despite heavy camouflage that hides much of the vehicle’s shape, we can tell that the new model will be sportier than the current-generation XC90 which is now in its 11th year.

It certainly does resemble the BMW X5, and it’s looking like the Swedish automaker is developing it to seat seven. The new XC90 will be built on Volvo’s new scalable SPA platform and will be launched early next year. Volvo promises that it’ll be one of the safest vehicles on the market. Power will likely come from the new VEA engines, which are four-cylinder turbocharged powerplants in both gasoline and diesel variants.

Previously, it was announced that the 2015 Volvo XC90 will launch with a plug-in hybrid variant as well.
