Volvo Shows Off The C30 Electric In Very Cold Climate

Batteries and cold climates often don’t mix well. Anyone who has tried to operate an electric device, like a camera that has been sitting in the cold, will soon find that the batteries have lost their charge.

This sort of issue isn’t catastrophic with a small device, just a little inconvenient. The same can’t be said about a car, which has to work in all climates.

Volvo currently allows select customers to lease the C30 Electric and worked hard to ensure that not only the car will work in cold climates, but also the car can generate heat to make its occupants feel more comfortable.

To prove what its car has achieved, the company staged an event in Finland to show what the C30 Electric can do.

The test started by placing the car in a cold climate chamber, which kept the car at a steady -13 degrees Fahrenheit.

Not only did the cars start, but they were also able to warm up very quickly because of its separately-fueled heating system. The C30 Electric has three heaters, an electric immersion heater, an electric PTC heater, and a fuel operated heater that runs on ethanol.

The testers on hand were very impressed, not only with the way the car drove in icy conditions, but also how quickly the heaters warmed up the car. You can watch the video after the jump:

Volvo "Mean Green" Hybrid Truck Attempts World Speed Record

Volvo’sMean Green” is one tough looking truck. Although it is not ready to haul any trailers down the road, the hybrid is going to make an attempt to break its own record by hitting a top speed in excess of 165 mph (260 km/h).

“Mean Green” puts out a whopping 2,100 hp and makes just under 5,000 lb. ft. of torque, firmly installing it in the insane category when it comes to trucks. The hybrid truck uses a highly tweaked version of Volvo’s D16 engine and a modified version of Volvo’s automated I-Shift gearbox.

The hybrid system adds all the acceleration to the diesel engine to make this a speed machine. “The result is a lightning-speed boost from start-off without any of the customary diesel-engine delay,” said Boije Ovebrink, ‘Mean Green’s owner and driver. “It’s like a champagne cork, but without the sound effects. For the first couple of seconds the truck just makes a slight whistle until the diesel engine, which runs on renewable liquid rosin diesel, starts delivering with an explosive force.”

‘Mean Green’ makes its attempt on April 27th at Wendover Airfield in Utah, USA. You can watch a video of the truck racing a Ferrari after the jump.

Volvo V40 Has Worlds First Pedestrian Airbag System – Videos

Swedish automaker Volvo has always been known for manufacturing some of the world’s safest vehicles. But now Volvo is looking to not just protect the passengers in the car, but the pedestrians roaming the streets.

We all know accidents happen, and try as we might to prevent them with technology – it’ll still happen because we’re human beings. Volvo is hoping when those accidents happen, they can help prevent serious injury by offering the world’s first Pedestrian Airbag System. That’s right, the poor guy or gal getting hit by a Volvo will land on a fluffy, cushy airbag rather than the hard hood or even worse, the glass windshield.

The Volvo V40, unveiled at this week’s 2012 Geneva Motor Show, will be equipped with the Pedestrian Airbag System alongside its Pedestrian Detection technology that will hopefully prevent a collision with a pedestrian in the first place.

Other automakers have tweaked the design of their hoods to soften the blow of a pedestrian collision, but the Volvo system will detect a vehicle-to-pedestrian accident and respond similar to a vehicle-to-vehicle collision. The system sensors will trigger the section of the hood closest to the windshield to pop up slightly and a U-shaped airbag will deploy from underneath, forming a cushion around the base and sides of the windshield and A-pillars.

Hopefully there aren’t any accidental deployments of the Pedestrian Airbag System – like say, hitting a rock on the freeway while traveling 65-mph. That wouldn’t be good at all.

Watch videos of these new pedestrian-safety technologies from Volvo below.
