Plans for the Chrysler 100 compact are close to being approved, according to a recent interview with Fiat-Chrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne.

As speculated earlier in the year, the Chrysler 100 will be produced as a hatchback model, with Marchionne expressing his encouragement with the success of the Ford Focus model.

“I think we’re debunking a lot of the myth about hatchbacks not being sellable in the U.S.,” said Marchionne. “And the great thing about hatches is that they have applications outside the U.S.”

Though the Chrysler 100 is “pretty well done” according to Marchionne, it has not been signed off yet.

The Chrysler 100 will be based on the same architecture as the Dodge Dart with similar engine offerings, including the potent 1.4-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, and the American automaker’s dual-clutch automatic transmission.
