Alfa Romeo is developing new high-performance engines including a re-engineered version of the V6 that Ferrari builds for Maserati.

The company is scheduled to release a new mid-size sedan in 2016 and the first of its new engine lineup will be packaged with that car. It will be available with two difference gasoline engines and a diesel option according to a report by Automotive News citing a supplier source. The range-topping engine will be a 2.9-liter V6 re-engineered for the brand and based on the 3.0-liter six-cylinder that Ferrari builds for Maserati’s Quattroporte and Ghibli. The report says Alfa’s version will make 480 hp courtesy of twin turbochargers and direct injection.

Below that engine, Alfa Romeo will also offer a 2.0-liter four-cylinder gasoline powerplant that will use Fiat’s MultiAir variable valve timing technology and a turbocharger to create between 180 and 330 hp depending on the application. That engine will be mated to both manual and dual-clutch transmissions and will be used in both rear- and all-wheel drive layouts.

Finally there will also be a 2.2-liter diesel engine that will offer between 135 hp to 210 hp.

The new mid-size sedan will go on sale in Europe first, but a U.S. launch is expected to take place shortly after that. Alfa Romeo hasn’t said what it plans to call the new sedan yet, but Automotive News claims it will debut on June 24, 2015 in conjunction with the brand’s 105th anniversary.
