Dodge Dart Recalled Over Brake Issue That Caused 7 Collisions

The 2013-2014 Dodge Dart has been recalled to address a possible issue with its brakes.

The recall campaign affects approximately 105,000 Dodge Dart sedans equipped with either the 2.0- or 2.4-liter engines. The American automaker conducted an investigation and found that the affected vehicles were built with brake booster vacuum-line routing that allows oil to reach the brake booster diaphragm. Prolonged exposure can eventually degrade the diaphragm, resulting in a loss of brake-assist function.

According to Dodge, failure is preceded by a pop or audible vacuum leak, followed by hard brake pedal feel.

The company confirmed that foundation brake function is unaffected but the condition will cause longer braking distances that could increase the chance of an accident in emergency situations. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has acknowledged that at least seven accidents and two minor injuries are related to the defect.

To address the issue, service technicians will replace the problematic hoses and inspect other system components. If oil has passed through into the vacuum tube, dealers will also replace the vacuum pump, brake booster and master cylinder.
