Smart is looking to the 1970s for design inspiration, and has revealed that its fortwo coupe will now come standard with a fabric-covered fixed roof.

The new top will definitely be available in Germany, but its North American availability has not yet been confirmed. If, for some reason, Brabus buyers prefer the fabric-covered roof over the panoramic roof, they can pick the new roof as a no-cost option. Smart says the design cue will blur the lines between the coupe and cabrio, so it will look like a cabrio but have a solid, fixed roof.

The new top will be packaged together with other changes for the 2016 model year such as new color options, the availability of adaptive front fog lamps, and a new child seat fastener.

Two new soft top colors, light beige and brown, will be offered on the Smart cabrio, bringing the total to five colors.
