The Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-In Hybrid has been available in other parts of the world for quite some time and has been a success, selling more than 100,000 units overall.

Billed as the second best selling plug-in hybrid in the world, the Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is set to make its U.S. debut in 2018. And when it does, it’ll be aiming right at another mainstream plug-in utility vehicle, the Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid. The minivan has impressed with excellent driving dynamics and performance, but it is on the pricey side, coming in at over $40,000 before incentives and destination.

According to product planners in the U.S. and Canada, Mitsubishi is taking Chrysler’s price tag into consideration when bringing their crossover over. They’re aiming to bring their car to market for $35,535, or roughly $5,000 cheaper than the Pacifica Hybrid. It also is much cheaper than other plug-in SUVs out there, like the BMW X5 eDrive40 and Volvo XC90 T8 which both cost over $60,000. It’s appropriate to consider the MINI Countryman S E Hybri, which costs $37,650 and is smaller than the Mitsubishi product. It’s even more interesting looking at non-plug-in hybrids like the Toyota RAV4 and Highlander Hybrids, which cost $30,530 and $37,665 respectively and have no pure electric range.

It’s important to realize that this pricing is before incentives and destination, painting a clear picture of how Mitsubishi intends to continue its plug-in success in North America.

The Outlander PHEV has an all-wheel-drive setup, with a 2.0-liter four-cylinder handling the front axles and two electric motors assisting it. Based on a drive last year at Mitsubishi’s HQ in Japan, we found it to be an interesting plug-in, capable of about 30 miles or 50 kilometers on a single charge.

Jeep Wrangler plug-in hybrid coming as well! Mitsubishi has set an excellent example with the 1500W inverter, both J1772 and ChaDeMo charger ports, and off-road capability. Jeep will have more clearance.
