Ruggedized SUVs are in fashion these days so it’s no surprise to see Volkswagen joining the party.

Just introduced at the New York International Auto Show is the brand-new 2024 Volkswagen Atla s Peak Edition. It’s a new trim that joins the equally new Atlas this year, inspired by the Basecamp Concept shown back in 2019.

Up front, there is a new look on the fascia that includes silver underbody cladding. Those with keen eyes will notice the lower portion of the front end has styling reminiscent of the swoopier Atlas Cross Sport. There are two chrome strips that run across the blacked-out grille. Centered among them is a large, illuminated Volkswagen logo.

At the side of the vehicle there’s more badging, with a gloss-black logo strip housing a Peak Edition badge on the front quarter panel. The badge is finished in orange and chrome. The vehicle will come wearing black eighteen-inch alloy wheels with 255/60R18 all-terrain tires.

Black and Silver

The side sills continue the black and silver theme, while the side mirrors, window surround, wheel arches, and roof rails are all finished in just black.

The rear of the Atlas Peak Edition has a black tailgate strip as well as a black and silver diffuser. As is a constant Volkswagen design cue, there are chrome exhaust bezels, that aren’t actually connected to the exhaust.

Finally, there are some new exterior colors for the Atlas Peak Edition, including Avocado Green, shown above, and Pure Grey.

The View Inside

Inside, the new Peak Edition continues the color theme found on the logos. The material Volkswagen uses on the seats is called Titan Black leatherette, and it features light grey accents and orange contrast stitching. On both the dashboard and door inserts is a black metallic checker pattern, unique for this model. The steering wheel wears the Peak Edition logo and another is backlit on the dashboard itself.

Those needing a bit more flash, there’s ambient lighting with 30 color choices available.

Familiar Underneath

Although the new Peak Edition Atlas receives updates inside and out, mechanically it is very similar to other 2024 Atlas models. The only real change to performance is the addition of the all-terrain tires, and of course it comes with standard all-wheel drive. Volkswagen is very upfront that the Peak Edition is an appearance package and not significant off-road upgrade.

The brand doesn’t’ want to sacrifice any of the Atlas’ on-road capabilities as that’s where the majority of customers will use it. That means the Peak uses the same suspension set-up, all-wheel drive configuration, and 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine making 269 hp and 273 lb-ft. of torque.

One Peak, Two Choices

For now, the Atlas will be the only vehicle to receive the Peak Edition. Well, actually two Peak Edition, er, editions will be offered on the 2024 Atlas. But, if demand is strong, expect the Peak to spread to other Volkswagen SUVs.

Expect to see the 2024 Volkswagen Atlas Peak Edition launch with the rest of the Atlas lineup later this summer. Pricing details on the Peak Edition and other Atlas trims will be available closer to vehicle launch.
