Mazda-mania just happened over the weekend, with a record setting 683 Miatas parading in Lelystad, Netherlands. The sight of so many Mazda enthusiasts jogged our foggy memories, and helped us to remember our own personal connections with the brand, as well as some of the greatest Mazda’s of all time.

The 1990s was a great time for Japanese sports cars. Pretty much every manufacturer was building a world class performance machine including Mazda, with the third generation RX-7. But that was twenty years ago and what may have been great then, might not be any good today. So, we have gotten our hands on a pristine, low mileage 1993 Mazda RX-7 to see if it was all hype, or the real deal.

The 1990s is a decade known for things like flannel shirts, grunge music, Barney the purple dinosaur and Napster. But for those who live and breathe high octane fuel, the ‘90s was also a great time for performance vehicles. With the world economy in fine shape, manufacturers everywhere were producing some impressive machinery. This is the decade that gave birth to the Dodge Viper, McLaren F1 and Lamborghini Diablo.

After impressing us during a comparison test earlier in the year, we get our hands on a 2014 Mazda CX-5 for an extended test drive. Over the next three months we will put this vehicle through a barrage of tests and situations to see how well it stacks up during everyday life.

The AutoGuide family is constantly growing and we would like to welcome our newest family member. No, we haven’t hired another caroholic into our ranks. This new addition is a little more mechanical, it is the 2014 Mazda CX-5.

Popular throughout the world, it’s surprising nonetheless that enthusiasm for the Mazda MX-5 Miata is perhaps nowhere greater than in Lelystad, Netherlands.

The 2014 Mazda 3 is out and about testing in Southern California, as one of our spy photographers caught it in action on the road.

Telluride, Colorado and Sundance, Utah, the two extremes of our trip today, sit just over 330 miles apart. That is, if you take the easiest, quickest and most painless route there. Today, however, Mike and I will do the exact opposite of that, as we look to stay in the top three of the Mazda Adventure Rally.

While feeling proud of our results in the first section, we fueled up, (the car and ourselves) to hit the road and conquer challenge number two for the day. The challenge involves us hitting the roads between Buena Vista and Ridgeway, and finding the biggest difference in altitude on our route.

We made a bee-line out of boulder Colorado and as per our challenge had our eyes on six landmarks, a risky move, as we were warned that five is the average, but Mike and I certainly don’t consider ourselves the average rally team. To help put us in the lead, we targeted the most landmarks that are on the continental divide, netting us bonus points.

Arriving at the hotel was a simple task. It was one of the only pieces of information Mike and I had prior to setting off. And we didn’t even need to know how to get there as Mazda took care of shuttling us from the airport to our accommodations.

My boss called me a keener once for arriving to an event far earlier than anyone else, but today, being early is literally the only thing I can do to prepare.

Sitting in the gate two- hours prior to my flight taking off is not crazy. It’s being prepared. I’m here early in case there was traffic, or delays, or the usual security nonsense at the way into the airport.

Equipped with a ticket, but no explanation, I’m a little nervous. Mazda essentially said, “you’re going here, for this period of time,” with no details on where exactly we’re going, where we’re staying or what roads what to expect… It’s all a bit chaotic, and I’m worried about being at the mercy of chaos.

In a clever fashion, Mazda has proved that its MX-5 Miata is the world’s fastest convertible in a drag race set in Southern California.
