Just how balanced is the new 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata?

To show off the sports car’s near perfect 50/50 weight distribution, the Japanese automaker has recreated its Miata balance-beam act, which was first done in 2011 with the previous-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata. This time around, the company took the new 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata and centered it on a steel balance beam structure with an extremely sensitive center fulcrum. The goal was to have the sports car perfectly balanced on the beam, remaining stationary without any additional structural support.

Mazda released a new video showcasing the balance-beam act for the 2016 Mazda MX-5 Miata, which tips the scales at a scant 2,332 lbs while powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 155 hp. The video also features key members that contributed to the development of the new MX-5 Miata, who talk about the “gram strategy” that focused on analyzing each component of the roadster in order to shed as much weight as possible.
