Mazda has its own ignition switch call that affects 4.9 million older vehicles worldwide.

The Japanese automaker has announced that too much grease on electrical contact points in the ignition switches can carbonize and reduce electrical insulation. Over time, continuous use can cause electricity to flow between the points and make the switches overheat, potentially causing smoke or even a fire. In the U.S., 1.36 million vehicles are affected with the recall covering the 1990-1996 323 and Protege, 1993-1998 626, 1993-1995 929, 1993-1997 MX-6, 1989-1998 MPV and the 1992-1993 MX-3.

According to Mazda, the issue doesn’t affect the cars’ operation or safety devices and there have been no reported fires, crashes or injuries in the U.S. Worldwide however, there have been 13 reported fires but no injuries.

The automaker will start replacing ignition switches starting next month through its dealerships.

Since all of these affected models are before '00, how many of them are still on the road? I don't see too many '90s models anymore. Mazda will not fix close to half of these since a lot have probably gone to the junk yard.

My first car was a 1993 Mazda 626. I watched it be crushed, so that's one. Kept the badges though as a memory.
