GMC Boss Wants a Subcompact Crossover
The top boss at GMC thinks that a subcompact crossover would be a good addition to the lineup.
“That segment has grown so fast,” GMC chief Duncan Aldred told Automotive News. “I keep telling everyone, ‘How can General Motors’ truck brand not be in the fastest-growing segment in the industry, an SUV segment?'”
GMC teased the idea of a subcompact crossover with the Granite Concept back in 2010 and in early 2015, the brand filed to keep the Granite trademark current.

GM struck gold with the Buick Encore subcompact crossover, which saw a 53 percent sales jump in 2014, and is already up another 33 percent through November of this year.
The major argument against a GMC small crossover is that it would eat into the Encore’s sales as both are sold at the same dealerships, but that doesn’t seem to worry Aldred. “We’ve got to build world-class brands,” said Aldred. “If the first thing we do is ask, ‘Well, hasn’t Buick got one?’ Then we’re constantly suppressing one brand for another.”
