Mercedes-Benz S 560e Plug-In Arrives With 30-Mile Electric Range
Mercedes-Benz has rolled out the latest plug-in hybrid version of the S-Class full-size sedan at the 2017 Frankfurt Motor Show – the S 560e.
The S 560e combines Mercedes’ 3.0-liter, 367 horsepower V6 engine with a 90 kW (about 120 hp) electric motor housed within the 9G-Tronic nine-speed automatic transmission. The lithium ion battery pack is smaller than in the outgoing S-Class hybrid, but thanks to better chemistry, has an increased capacity of 13.5 kWh. Mercedes claims an all-electric range of around 50 kilometers, or about 31 miles. That smaller battery pack has also made room for additional rear luggage space, with the trunk capacity growing from 395 liters to 410.

A new system called Eco Assist will further aid in overall vehicle efficiency. Eco Assist will take into account multiple factors and notify the driver when it may be most appropriate to let off the gas and coast, or when the brakes should be applied so the regen system can recharge the battery. It will use the navigation data, traffic sign recognition info and data from the safety assists, like the radar and camera, to make driving style suggestions in order to achieve maximum efficiency. Additionally, the haptic feedback pedal will provide some resistance when traveling in electric mode in order to communicate to the driver when the combustion engine will kick in.
The S 560e will come with an onboard 7.2‑kW charger, which will enable fast charging when combined with the Mercedes Wallbox home charger. Mercedes claims the hybrid luxury sedan will use just 2.1-liters of fuel for every 100 km traveled – equivalent to about 112 US MPG when converted directly.
Pricing and availability for the S 560e has not yet been announced.
