Fleet demand for the Chevy Silverado EV is strong.

In a Q2 2022 earnings call, GM CEO Mary Barra explained that fleet customers have taken a liking to the Silverado EV. Orders are strong, with each fleet customer ordering on average, a whopping 200 units. Altogether, GM has reported more than 150,000 preorders for the electric truck, although it won’t be on sale until early 2023. True, the Ford F-150 lighting is already on sale and is actively being delivered to customers. But, truck owners are brand loyal, and rarely, if ever, switch brands.

The EV Silverado and F150 Lightning are both EV full-sized trucks, but they take different paths to the final solution. The Ford Lighting EV truck uses a modified base F-150 chassis. This means it can accommodate nearly all of the upfitting and additions that a regular gas-powered F-150 can. The EV Silverado is similar to the gas-powered truck in name only. It uses a unibody style construction on the GM Ultium platform and isn’t as easily modified with traditional upfitting and bed construction techniques. Still, GM says that the truck will crest 400 miles of range, and can fast charge at a rate of 350KW. The F-150 lighting can only handle 150KW.

Only time will tell which EV truck will reign supreme. At the very least, the strong fleet pre-order performance of the Silverado EV tells us that people are very much interested in the electric car revolution. How fitting that the base work truck (WT) trim will be the first truck off the production line.
