The 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV PPV Could Be the First Police Ready Electric Vehicle
The Chevrolet Blazer EV PPV might just be the first fully-electric police car package, ever.
Yesterday, Chevrolet unveiled its fully-electric midsize crossover, the 2024 Chevrolet Blazer EV. Seemingly directly aimed at the Ford Mustang Mach-E, the Blazer’s power, sizing, and range seems on target, but its unique FWD, RWD, or AWD option sets it apart from other EVs on sale. The topmost Blazer SS looks to be a certifiable electric rocket, with 557 horsepower, and AWD.
But, the PPV (Police Pursuit Vehicle) won’t be a slouch, either. Chevrolet says that the PPV builds on the Blazer SS, meaning at the very least it will have the same 557 horsepower and high-performance Brembo brakes. But, Chevrolet is taking things a step further, with a special interior that is built for the needs of police officers. Unfortunately, Chevrolet hasn’t released any pictures of the police-spec interior, but we expect significant changes, like, possibly, fewer touch screens and space for big laptops, siren controls, and other equipment.
The Chevrolet Blazer EV PPV is the first purpose-built EV police package from a manufacturer, but it’s not quite the first EV Police vehicle. Some municipalities have experimented with Tesla Model Ys but complained about its lack of space and high cost to upfit the vehicle for police duty. Ford has announced intentions of more purpose-built EV fleet solutions, including police cars, and there’s even a Mach-E in Police livery, but no official announcement or police-ready trim of any Ford EV. Well, at least not yet.
GM’s fleet vice president, Ed Peper, is optimistic about the benefits of electrified commercial applications, including police cars. “Along with zero-tailpipe-emissions performance, it reduces the number and frequency of certain maintenance requirements typically associated with fleet vehicles,” said Peper.
We await more images and details of the 2024 Chevy Blazer EV PPV. No pricing has been announced, but the Blazer EV SS is already more than $65,000. We expect pricing for the Blazer PPV to likely be in a similar range.
