GM May Be Working On A Two-Door, Fully Electric Cheap Pickup Truck

Is GM working on a sub-maverick electrified pickup?

The Ford Maverick is such a hot seller, that the company can’t literally keep up with demand, especially its hybrid version powertrain. But, according to Automotive News, GM may be readying a competitor. This one would possibly be all-electric, and only two doors.

An Automotive News reporter saw the pickup truck with their own eyes, calling it futuristic and sporty,” with images behind the truck showing consumers using the truck for things like surfing. GM designer Michael Pevovar told Automotive News that affordability is the key to the vehicle, meaning it could start under $30,000.

Aside from its potential full EV nature, this wouldn’t be GM’s first foray into the small, car-based pickup segment. Chevrolet has sold multiple car-based pickups in Latin America, with the latest, the 2024 Chevrolet Montana, being a four-door variant roughly the same size as the Ford Maverick. That truck is powered by the same 1.2-liter turbocharged three-cylinder that does duty in the Buick Equinox GX, Chevy Trailblazer, and forthcoming Chevy Trax; no electrification at all. Yet, GM says the Montana won’t come to North America, and the mystery truck’s two-door nature is markedly different from the Montana.

If the truck does happen, its two-door, fully-electric nature could see it sit entirely alone in a segment where even truck manufacturers are axing their single-cab pickup truck lines. Even in Chevrolet’s own lineup, the midsized Colorado pickup is only available in crew cab from 2023 onward.

Right now, the electric two-door pickup is in an exploratory design phase, as GM susses out the viability and refines the concept of the model. If any model does happen, expect a potential concept truck to make an appearance at a future auto show.

I would love to see a small 2 door pickup ! It would be great to see a turbo 4 cylinder in it. I know it would be a big hit with the younger generation. i had a canyon 2 dr and loved it. You could even put one out with a hybrid engine. as for the electric i dont know .

Adding any new model that is not a hybrid or bev would be a mistake.
