Mercedes-Benz will launch the eSprinter in the US and Canada in the second half of 2023; European sales will follow.

Mercedes-Benz on Tuesday morning revealed the latest member of its all-electric family. Not a slinky supercar nor a burly SUV, the new addition is far more practical: the 2024 eSprinter, which electrifies the large delivery van.

The German automaker has taken a three-part approach to the new eSprinter, which will launch in the US and Canada later this year before eventually spreading to over 60 markets. The front module is the same for all eventual variants, and includes all the high-voltage components. The third, rear module houses the compact electric motor. The second module is the meat in this cargo van sandwich, housing the main body as well as the low-mounted battery pack between the axles.

At launch here in North America, Merc will first offer the eSprinter exclusively with the largest available battery pack, with 113 kWh of usable power. The battery pack uses a lithium and iron phosphate chemistry, which makes it nickel- and cobalt-free. Merc says the onboard charger is capable of 9.6 kW of maximum charging speed; DC fast charging is also possible, with up to 115 kW of recharge available. Those speeds translate to a 100-percent recharge via wallbox in a little over 12 hours, or a fast-charge 10-t0-80-percent run in 42 minutes. Mercedes quotes a combined WLTP range of 400 kilometers (249 miles), and a city-only range of 500 km (311 mi). Those numbers are likely to shrink slightly on the stricter EPA test-cycle, but sound like plenty for a day of deliveries nonetheless.

There will be two electric motors available: one with 136 horsepower, and another with 204. Both offer up a peak torque figure of 295 pound-feet.

With the high-roof, long-wheelbase configuration, the eSprinter offers up a cavernous 488 cubic feet (around 14 cubic meters, or 13,819 liters) inside. The maximum gross vehicle weight is 4.25 tonnes.

Mercedes is touting the digital aspect of the eSprinter, including the MBUX tweaks made to maximize its efficiency. When using the native navigation, the “Electric Intelligence” feature displays the current range based on the route’s traffic and topography. The system also allows drivers to pick a route that incorporates charging but still gets them to their destination as quickly as possible; the system can also account for a desired remaining charge at the destination. At charging stations, payment can be done via the infotainment system and Mercedes me membership. If we had to guess, coordination will be best at the upcoming Mercedes charging stations.

Other useful features for delivery teams include but are not limited to a digital rearview mirror, a powered sliding door, washable cargo area panels, and a heated windshield. The stability system adapts to the current load, as well. Drivers can also pre-condition the battery and cabin.

“With the new eSprinter, we are taking the electric large van segment to a new level. The triad of efficiency, range and load capacity with simultaneous TCO optimization makes the new eSprinter the most versatile Mercedes-Benz eVan ever,” says Mathias Geisen.

Mercedes-Benz will build the 2024 eSprinter in no less than three plants across the globe: Charleston, South Carolina; and its Düsseldorf and Ludwigsfelde plants in Germany. The company has invested 350 million euros in the program, including 50 million to each of the plants to adapt their lines. The 2024 Mercedes-Benz eSprinter will go on sale in Canada and the US in the second half of 2023; expect more details on pricing and specs closer to launch.
