Electric vs. Gasoline Cars: Emission Realities

Electric vehicles (EVs) are gaining attention for their role in reducing emissions, particularly in the context of combating climate change. Unlike gasoline cars, EVs do not emit pollutants from their tailpipes. However, they do require electricity to charge their batteries, and the generation of this electricity can involve the release of carbon dioxide (CO2). The extent of CO2 emissions depends largely on the methods used for electricity generation in a specific area. For instance, electricity produced from coal or natural gas results in higher carbon emissions compared to renewable sources like wind or solar power.

What are Locking Differentials and What New 4x4s Have Them?

Locking differentials are a type of differential used in vehicles to improve traction and handling, especially in off-road or challenging terrain conditions. The purpose of a locking differential is to ensure that both drive wheels opposite one another across an axle receive equal power, even if one of them is slipping. This is extremely beneficial when a suspension system is articulated and when one tire begins to lose traction, as is common in mud, steep rocky climbs, snow, and many trail wheeling circumstances. Luckily, many vehicles have these straight from the factory, though they can be added in the aftermarket as well.

It is designed to enhance safety by minimizing the risk of injury or damage in case of a cable or rope failure during winching.

Nutty Ferrari Patent Shows Adjustable Cockpit With Three Pedals

Patent filings from Ferrari reveal the brand is working on an interesting method of shifting the driver over in its cars. Under the filings, Ferrari is working on a movable driver’s seat, wheel, and up to three pedals that will shift on a track towards the middle of the car, resulting in a McLaren F1-style center-seat driving experience. Alternatively, the vehicle could be piloted from off-center, as in existing Ferrari road cars. Information found by AutoGuide in the patent seems to indicate that this will, unlike some center-seat vehicles, not fit three passengers. Ferrari’s patent filing states that “a side door can be… opened and closed to allow a driver to enter the passenger compartment.” If anything, this suggests there may be room for a single one, likely to the driver’s right as in conventional cars. Still, it isn’t entirely clear, as other diagrams leave no room for a passenger.
