With an all-new fortwo on the way, smart is sending off the current car with a limited edition model.

It’s that time of year again.

A few weeks ago we published a Top 10 list focusing on some of our favorite in-production vehicles that are getting on in years. In spite of their geriatric status these cars and trucks are aging gracefully, still capable of plastering a big ol’ grin across the lower portion of your face.

There’s a new smart for two coming and that’s great news. 

It’s that time of the month again, folks. For a collectively painful but short period of time, manufacturers are putting their usual press release repertoire to the side, instead focusing on what really matters: the almighty dollar.

German tuning company Brabus is already preparing a more powerful version of the freshly revealed Smart ForTwo. 

Smart just debuted its new fortwo and forfour city cars at an event in Berlin marking the return of a four-seat car to the brand.

The next Smart ForTwo and ForFour are scheduled to be revealed later today, but images of the cars meant to showcase their JBL speaker systems are revealing them early.

A brand new generation of Smart car will be unveiled tomorrow, and the company has released a set of sketches to preview what the cars look like.

Entering its third generation and built in partnership with French automaker Renault, spy photos of the next Smart ForTwo have just surfaced.

Heading to Germany’s Smart dealerships in October is a limited edition ForTwo Iceshine model, priced at around $18,300 (€14,490).

Back at the 2010 Paris Motor Show, Smart unveiled a collection of electric urban mobility products, with the fortwo electric car and ebike already becoming a reality. Next on its list will be the escooter, launching in 2014.

There are a lot of car stereotypes out there, like that Toyota builds dull appliances. While true on many fronts, the Japanese automaker does also make exciting sporty cars like the Scion FR-S, and Lexus LFA, both praised for their exhilarating rides, edgy styling and pulse-raising performance. But there’s another stereotype that needs to be dealt with.

Likely you’ve heard the phrase “German engineering” more than a few times in your life and there’s a popular misconception that it equals good reliability. German cars are well engineered, sometimes to be amazing performance machines and sometimes to be incredibly high-tech (and often both) but, Porsche aside, German cars don’t have the best track record for reliability.

With sky-high gas prices on the horizon and increasingly strict emissions standards for car manufacturers to live up to, consumers are constantly looking for more options when it comes to fuel economy, and automakers are equally eager to deliver. For those reasons manufacturers are continuing to downsize engines. It was a tough sell for car buyers to accept four-cylinder engines instead of six-cylinders, but will they have an easier time accepting three-cylinder engines?

Smart knows exactly how electric cars are perceived by the general public; as small and economic vehicles that you buy to save money on gas. But opinions can be changed, and Smart staged a clever marketing event which aimed to prove that acceleration and performance are also part of its electric cars persona. 

The idea is simple; take the classic game “pong” (although Smart calls it e-ball) and recreate it using cars as controllers. The acceleration is tested as the Smart cars must blast straight forwards and backwards as quickly as possible to avoid being scored on.

This may not prove that these cars are race track ready, but the brand is looking to invigorate sales by showing that small electric cars can be efficient, and fun.

The Smart fortwo can fit in some pretty small places, but can it fit in a 140-character Twitter post? It certainly can, as seen on the Smart Argentina twitter page. 

An advertisement made up of 455 individual tweets shows the Smart strolling downtown in a neat looking virtual flip book. Apart from the ASCII art, the ad looks like something you’d see on TV, complete with a neat 360-degree showcase of the fortwo.

The twitter account states (in Spanish) “It fits in any space. Why not in 140 characters? Smart Fortwo…a big idea for the city.”

We wonder if other companies will pick up on this innovative style of advertising.

Earlier today, we reported that Brabus introduced an all new Bullitt C-Class coupe. Packing 800-hp from a heavily retuned  V12, the Brabus Bullitt eclipses the output of the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG Black Series by nearly 300-hp.

Smart will debut a Brabus Fortwo EV and electric bike at the Geneva Motor Show, which is just around the corner now. The special edition Fortwo EV from Brabus will sport 17-inch wheels, Brabus styling accessories, and an “electric green” interior.

Michael Schumacher had twinkly eyes when he got his new bike, or at least that’s what Daimler said in its press release.

Making its way to the upcoming 2012 Geneva Motor Show will be Rinspeed’s Dock + Go creation, an innovative yet strange concept that will leave some scratching their heads.

There’s not a lot of mystery in the auto industry. Automakers release info on cars before they debut, and with leaked info and spy photos, even then, there’s often little that’s unknown about a new model before it arrives.

The 2012 Geneva Motor Show will play host to a refreshed Smart ForTwo, but we won’t have to wait until the show to see what Smart is planning on doing to their micro compact car.
