Lexus RZ – Review, Specs, Pricing, Features, Videos and More

The RZ is Lexus’ first foray into the world of electric vehicles. Sharing a platform with the Toyota bZ4X and Subaru Solterra, the RZ sets itself apart by offering more power than either of those two offerings. With a larger front motor, the all-wheel drive Lexus generates a total of 313 hp. Maximum range is just 220 miles on a single charge which is lower than most of its rivals.

But the Lexus RZ counters by offering more ground clearance and off-road capabilities than most other all-electric luxury SUVs.

Two hundred and seven. Or a little shy of one hundred and twenty-nine.

Those are the estimated ranges, in kilometers and miles respectively, that the 2023 Lexus RZ 450e is showing when I pick it up. It’s a windy December evening and the mercury is hovering right around the freezing point. I know that the estimate isn’t just reflective of the temperature but how the car was recently driven—something I don’t know—yet that’s of little comfort.

When I first drove the RZ back in February, the impression was that while it couldn’t compete on numbers, it retained the core Lexus experience that makes buyers so loyal to the brand. After spending a week with it however, I’m just not convinced the RZ measures up.

Lexus‘ latest arrives on the scene with less power and less range than its established competition. To complicate matters, it’s also showing up to the party fashionably late.

Do numbers really matter, though? We’re talking a luxury SUV here, the sort of vehicle people buy for reasons of the heart at least as much as the head.
