Things might go from bad to worse for Toyota’s young-minded  Scion sub-brand in the next two years.

The Scion FR-S convertible has been delayed indefinitely, according to a recent report sourcing unidentified Toyota insiders.

Although all vehicles roll off of showroom floors with EPA certified fuel efficiency ratings, as the famous saying goes ‘individual results may vary’.

If it’s not a diesel-powered, rear-wheel-drive station wagon with a manual transmission, it’s not worth considering, let alone buying.

For this year’s SEMA Show, three builders will be customizing 2014 Scion tC vehicles as part of the annual Scion Tuner Challenge.

When the Scion xB was first introduced in 2003, it was a funky looking little square box aimed at youths involved in the tuner car scene. However, like many vehicles of this era targeted at younger buyers, it never really caught on. Blame the lack of power, blame the quirky looks, blame an unknown brand, but the xB look was destined to disappear into the automotive hall of shame with Edsel, the Aztek and the Vehicross.

Toyota is considering launching its own performance brand within the next couple of years.

Could a Scion FR-S hybrid be on the horizon? Don’t be surprised if it is.

Despite slumping sales, a U.S. Toyota executive has confirmed that the Scion brand won’t be seeing new models any time soon.

Scion has announced this year’s Tuner Challenge finalists that will be bringing their modified tC vehicles to the 2013 SEMA Show in Las Vegas.

Subaru bumped the price of its 2014 BRZ by $100 to $26,390, and the 2014 Scion FR-S will also see a modest bump of $80 to $25,335 including delivery.

It’s hard to believe, but it has been a year since the Scion FR-S first went on sale. With years of hype and rumors, it felt like the “Toyobaru” would never arrive. Once it finally did hit showroom floors, the FR-S had to live up to an out-of-control legend the likes of which even Star Wars episode 7 may not encounter.

It comes as no surprise to hear that Toyota is working to generate more power for its popular 86 model, known as the Scion FR-S in America. The latest report does, however, contradict past rumors of a turbocharged engine, instead pointing towards something larger under the hood.

At Toyota’s national dealer meeting in Atlanta this month, the Japanese automaker showed off a Scion FR-S convertible concept and a drawing of a subcompact crossover concept, hinting at things to come.

For the 2014 model year, Scion will be releasing the limited edition iQ Monogram that takes the iQ “to the next level by adding premium features at a great value,” according to the Japanese automaker.

Scion has announced that every single one of its 2014 vehicles will be outfitted with a touchscreen audio system, along with pricing for its full 2014 model lineup which has increased slightly across the board. 

Sinking Scion sales and questions about the brand’s future direction could lead to pruning the company’s bloated dealer network.

Rumors have been spreading that Toyota has killed off all hopes of a convertible variant for its 86 model, but it appears those may be  false.

The FR-S may have changed the direction of Toyota’s Scion brand for ever, though surprisingly, it would not be towards performance machines.
